The NISS (Número de Identificação de Segurança Social) is your Portuguese Social Security number. It is mandatory for anyone taking up employment or registering as self-employed in Portugal. We schedule the appointment with Segurança Social and draft the required forms so the registration goes through cleanly.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a NIF before getting a NISS?
Yes. Your NIF (tax number) is required for the Social Security registration. If you do not have one yet, we can obtain it for you first.
Do I have to attend an appointment in person?
In many cases the registration can be handled with the forms we prepare, but Segurança Social sometimes requires an in-person appointment, which we schedule for you.
Is the NISS the same as the NIF?
No. The NIF is your tax number and the NISS is your Social Security number. Both are needed to work legally in Portugal.
