How is net salary calculated in Portugal?

Net salary is your gross pay minus Social Security (11% employee share) and IRS income tax. IRS is worked out on an annual basis: from your gross annual salary we subtract the Category A specific deduction (the higher of €4,104 or the Social Security you paid), then apply the progressive IRS brackets to the remaining taxable income. The result divided by the number of monthly payments gives your take-home pay per month.

What is deducted from a Portuguese salary?

Two things are withheld from an employee salary in Portugal: Social Security (Segurança Social) at 11% of gross pay, and IRS income tax withheld at source. IRS is progressive, so higher earners pay a larger share, and a solidarity surcharge applies above €80,000. The employer also pays a separate Social Security contribution (23.75%) on top of your gross, but that is not deducted from your pay.

Do dependents and region change my Portuguese net salary?

Yes. Each dependent gives an IRS tax credit (dedução à coleta) that lowers the tax due, and being married and filing jointly splits the taxable income (quociente conjugal), which usually reduces the effective rate. Your region also matters: Madeira and the Azores apply reduced IRS rates compared with mainland Portugal, so residents there keep a little more.
