Renewing Your Portuguese Driving Licence in 2026 (IMT Revalidation)

How to renew (revalidate) a Portuguese driving licence in 2026: when it expires, the age-60 medical rule, doing it online at the IMT, costs, and the over-two-years catch.

Renewing a Portuguese driving licence — revalidação da carta de condução — is usually far simpler than people expect, and for most drivers under 60 it is a purely administrative step with no medical and no exam. The confusion comes from mixing it up with two different things: exchanging a foreign licence for a Portuguese one, and the extra rules that kick in once you turn 60 or let the licence lapse for too long. This guide keeps them separate and sets out exactly what renewing your existing Portuguese licence involves in 2026.

If instead you hold a foreign licence and need to swap it for a Portuguese one, that is a different process covered in our driving licence exchange guide.

When Your Licence Needs Renewing

A Portuguese licence does not have a single fixed lifespan; the expiry date printed on your card depends on your age and category, and it shortens as you get older. You renew on or before that date. Crucially, renewal follows your country of residence: if Portugal is where you legally live, you revalidate through the Portuguese authority (the IMT), not the country that first issued the card (see our driving data page for the residence rule and its legal basis).

The single most useful thing to know is the medical rule, because it is where most of the worry sits and most of it is unfounded.

The Age-60 Medical Rule (Group 1)

For ordinary private categories — Group 1: AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, BE — a medical certificate (atestado médico) is required only from age 60. Below 60, the revalidation is administrative and no medical certificate is needed at all. From 60 onwards, a doctor issues the atestado médico attesting your fitness to drive; it is done electronically and transmitted straight to the IMT, and it is valid for six months.

So for a typical category B driver under 60, renewal is just paperwork. There is no exam and no doctor's visit. This is the detail worth internalising, because a lot of online advice implies every renewal needs a medical, and for most people it does not.

Professional Categories and Long-Expired Licences

Two situations do carry more:

  • Group 2 (professional categories — C, C1, D, D1 and their E variants) require a medical, and where applicable a psychological, assessment at every revalidation, regardless of age. If you drive lorries or buses professionally, budget for that assessment each time.
  • A licence expired for a long period — generally more than two years — additionally requires passing a special driving examination (exame especial) before it can be revalidated. This is the real reason not to let a licence sit expired: a quick administrative renewal can turn into an exam if you leave it too long.

All of this rests on the RHLC (Decreto-Lei n.º 138/2012) and Article 130.º of the Código da Estrada, transcribed on our driving licence data page.

How to Renew, Step by Step

In practice the process runs like this:

  1. Check your expiry date and category. Confirm whether you are Group 1 under 60 (administrative), Group 1 from 60 (medical needed), or Group 2 (medical always).
  2. Get the medical only if it applies. If you are 60 or over, or in a professional category, see a doctor for the electronic atestado médico, which reaches the IMT automatically.
  3. Confirm your proof of residence. The IMT needs evidence you are resident in Portugal — typically an atestado de residência from your junta de freguesia, alongside your NIF and identity document.
  4. Submit the revalidation to the IMT online. The renewal is filed through the IMT's online service; you upload your documents and pay the fee, and the process is followed up during verification.
  5. Receive your renewed card. Once approved, your renewed Portuguese driving licence is issued.

What It Costs and How Long It Takes

The IMT charges a fixed administrative fee for revalidation, and if a medical applies you pay the doctor separately for the atestado. There is no exam cost unless the over-two-years rule pulls you into an exame especial. Timelines are usually short for a clean administrative renewal, longer if a medical or verification step is involved, so start a few weeks before your card expires rather than on the day.

Common Mistakes

  • Letting it lapse past two years, which upgrades a simple renewal into a special driving exam.
  • Assuming you need a medical when you are under 60 in an ordinary category — you do not.
  • Renewing in the wrong country. If you are resident in Portugal, revalidate here through the IMT, not through the country that issued the card.
  • Leaving the atestado de residência to the last minute, since the junta de freguesia step can add days.

Renewing a Portuguese licence is one of the more forgiving pieces of Portuguese admin, as long as you do it before it lapses and you know whether your age or category triggers a medical. For the wider settling-in checklist, our relocation hub covers the rest.
