Overview
If your Portuguese driving licence has expired, it is revalidated (renewed) through the IMT. For ordinary categories (Group 1, e.g. B) under age 60 the revalidation is administrative, with no medical certificate; from 60, or for professional (Group 2) categories, a medical certificate applies. A licence expired for more than about two years additionally needs a special driving exam. The renewal is filed online and requires proof of Portuguese residence (residência habitual). We confirm your eligibility, help you assemble the proof of residence (atestado de residência), prepare and submit the revalidation, and follow it through to issuance.

Frequently Asked Questions
For an ordinary category B (Group 1) licence, only from age 60. Under 60 the renewal is administrative with no medical certificate. From 60, or for professional (Group 2) categories, a medical certificate applies, issued electronically by a doctor and sent to the IMT.
Revalidation is available for an expired licence. It is only once a Portuguese licence has been expired for more than about two years that a special driving exam is required.
The IMT renewal requires Portuguese residence (residência habitual), so it works when Portugal is, or becomes, your normal residence. If you live in another country, the renewal is generally managed by your country of residence. We confirm your basis before starting.
We check your residence basis and documents before filing, precisely to avoid this, and if the IMT requests corrections we remedy and resubmit at no extra service fee. As a facilitation service the fixed fee covers our work and is not refundable for a decision that rests with the authorities; the IMT government fee is paid separately to the IMT.
